Working titanium requires special know-how related chiefly to the properties of the metal. Titanium is a low-density material (4.5 as opposed to 8.5 for the Inconel family) and has average ductility. Pure titanium, the mechanical properties of which are lower than those of stainless steel, can only be cold-worked, while titanium alloys, which are stronger but less ductile, must be hot-worked. The mechanical properties tail off significantly above 200°C (392° F).

With a few exceptions, titanium alloy can be used at temperatures of up to 450°C (842°F).
The search for least weight is a key element and using titanium can lead to weight savings of 25% or more.
